چکیده

Superconducting qubit designs vary in complexity from singleand few-junction systems, such as the transmon and flux qubits, to the many-junction fluxonium. Here, we consider the question of whether the many degrees of freedom in the fluxonium circuit can limit the qubit coherence time. Such a limitation is in principle possible, due to the interactions between the low-energy, highly anharmonic qubit mode and the higher-energy, weakly anharmonic collective modes. We show that so long as the coupling of the collective modes with the external electromagnetic environment is sufficiently weaker than the qubit-environment coupling, the qubit dephasing induced by the collective modes does not significantly contribute to decoherence. Therefore, the increased complexity of the fluxonium qubit does not constitute by itself a major obstacle for its use in quantum computation architectures.

Proposal for coherent coupling of Majorana zero modes and superconducting qubits using the 4π Josephson effect.

We propose to use an ancilla fluxonium qubit to interact with a Majorana qubit hosted by a topological one-dimensional wire. The coupling is obtained using the Majorana qubit-controlled 4π Josephson effect to flux bias the fluxonium qubit. We demonstrate how this coupling can be used to sensitively identify topological superconductivity, to measure the state of the Majorana qubit, to construct ...

Protected quantum computation with multiple resonators in ultrastrong coupling circuit QED.

We investigate theoretically the dynamical behavior of a qubit obtained with the two ground eigenstates of an ultrastrong coupling circuit-QED system consisting of a finite number of Josephson fluxonium atoms inductively coupled to a transmission line resonator. We show a universal set of quantum gates by using multiple transmission line resonators (each resonator represents a single qubit). We...

Quantization of inductively shunted superconducting circuits

We present a method for calculating the energy levels of superconducting circuits that contain highly anharmonic, inductively shunted modes with arbitrarily strong coupling. Our method starts by calculating the normal modes of the linearized circuit and proceeds with numerical diagonalization in this basis. As an example, we analyze the Hamiltonian of a fluxonium qubit inductively coupled to a ...

Relaxation and frequency shifts induced by quasiparticles in superconducting qubits

As low-loss nonlinear elements, Josephson junctions are the building blocks of superconducting qubits. The interaction of the qubit degree of freedom with the quasiparticles tunneling through the junction represents an intrinsic relaxation mechanism. We develop a general theory for the qubit decay rate induced by quasiparticles, and we study its dependence on the magnetic flux used to tune the ...

Non-Poissonian quantum jumps of a fluxonium qubit due to quasiparticle excitations.

As the energy relaxation time of superconducting qubits steadily improves, nonequilibrium quasiparticle excitations above the superconducting gap emerge as an increasingly relevant limit for qubit coherence. We measure fluctuations in the number of quasiparticle excitations by continuously monitoring the spontaneous quantum jumps between the states of a fluxonium qubit, in conditions where rela...
